about

As I begin to release all this music, I had to decide what to start with. The first one was the hardest to choose. So I chose "The First One."

This track was written and recorded in the spring of 2008 with my friend Steve Sulikowski in Los Angeles. Atlantic Records had me shacked up in half a mansion off Melrose in West Hollywood. I had a badass black Dodge Charger at the time and Sam had recently driven it into a wall. I think maybe that was the infamous night he walked into a wall as well, but that incident involved drinking and texting (and walking).

At the time Andy Karp (who was head of A&R at Atlantic at the time) was my A&R guy and had me writing with everyone in LA. We were still looking for a sound. Steve and I really hit it off and wrote a few bangers I can't wait to get out. He also produced this demo. He's a true talent.

At the time I had a friend who was going through a break up and was lonely and afraid. Sometimes people just need to hear that it'll all be OK. So I wrote this for her. It's funny how a real sentiment can be timeless. That's what I love about a great song.

lyrics

So you’re lookin… always lookin
For someone to show you
What love songs are written about
How you’ve tried but… you can’t find love
So you stand there alone thinking your time has run out
Just Remember

The first one’s the hardest one
I’m not gonna lie
Love don’t come easy it’s so hard to find
Just keep on movin and you’ll find your way
You’re gonna get there one of these days
The first one’s the hardest one
The first one’s the hardest one

So you’re leavin… finally leaving
And you ain’t commin back
You’re bags are all packed by the stairs
All the questions and second guessing
You’re losin your mind cause you’ve never been here before
Just Remember

The first one’s the hardest one
I’m not gonna lie
Nothing is easy bout sayin goodbye
Just keep on movin… you’ll find your way
You’re gonna get through this one of these days
The first one’s the hardest one
The first one’s the hardest one

I know this time is gonna be tough
When It feels like you’ve just had enough
Don’t ever give up
It’ll all be okay
