about
Back in 2008, Doop, Sam, and I rented a Condo in the West End of Nashville. In my opinion, this is when Nashville was at it’s coolest. We would sit at the crib all day writing and recording songs, and at night we’d hit Losers, or the Blue Bar, or Tootsies. Mostly Tin Roof, actually. The Jack and Coke was infamous for making everything alright! Mind you, you could still get into these bars at the time. (The population of the Ville doubled since then.)
It was an incredible experience among so many incredible experiences in my life. But those times when you forsake all that you have, and move somewhere to follow your dreams; those are the times that are made of magic.
Nashville was our favorite town at the time. You couldn’t have a bad time there. Rock had introduced us to the right people, and being associated with him at the time got you in the door anywhere. And once in the door, I would do my thing, and that was all she wrote. For an instant, we had it in the palm of our hands, and that was a time to remember.
In terms of Songwriting, I wrote Easy Come Easy Go, In Crowd, Nice Girls Finish Last… We also wrote this week’s release, Getting What You Want. Somewhere in all this, Doop and I got on this kick that we needed to write from the girl’s perspective. The girl who had her heart broken… Her story held a passion in it. She is someone that everyone with a heart should root for. And songwriters know her. I know her.
We spend our lives looking into the hearts of everyone. Imagining their hopes… their dreams… and fears. In this song, we wanted to give the ladies some redemption. We wanted to warn the fellas to think twice before they make their mistakes. I feel like we got there…

LYRICS:
He wasn’t where he said
He would be
“Never again…”
That’s what he promised
She stared and asked him,
“Where you been?”
And she begged again
That he be honest
And he was tired of living a lie
So he broke down
And told her the truth
But sometimes
Getting what you want
Can get the best of you
Sometimes getting what you want
Can get the best of you
Now she couldn’t believe
What she heard
She listened close
To what he told her
He’d been seeing
Somebody else
And there she knew
That it was over
And she said,
“If you know what you want,
Then do whatever
You got to do.”
But sometimes
Getting what you want
Can get the best of you
Sometimes getting what you want
Can get the best of you
And Oh…
Heaven gave the Devil his pride
And there ain’t nothing
The angels can say
He did it his own way
He threw it all
Right into the fire
Now every night
He’s out on the town
Another joke
Another cold one
He used to be
The king of this bar
But these days
Ain’t like the old ones
And every night
He looks in the mirror
And wonders,
“What the hell did I do?”
But sometimes
Getting what you want
Can get the best of you
Getting what you want
Can get the best of you
Getting what you want
Can get the best of you
